Fostering an Intercultural Mindset in Foreign Language Classrooms

Dr. Ana Sofia Hofmeyr: Kansai University Faculty of Foreign Language Studies

In Japanese internationalisation policy, foreign language education is often presented as a gateway to developing global jinzai, i.e. globally competent human resources. Yet, while universities spend vast amounts of resources developing foreign language programmes, English in particular, there is often no concrete guidance regarding which intercultural and global skills to focus on or the ways in which educators are expected to integrate these skills into their courses. This interactive talk will cover and invite attendees to discuss the role of foreign language education in developing globally competent graduates in Japan. Which intercultural and global skills should we aim to incorporate in our classrooms? How can we integrate these skills into the curricula? What challenges do foreign language educators face in the process and how can we overcome them? Ultimately, how can we design and develop courses that will successfully prepare our students to live in more intercultural environments now and in the future?
